Youth Volunteer

2009 was the first year that we offered the youth volunteer award. Scott Cornelius was our first place winner but all of the other youths listed below won an award.

Scott Cornelius-is in grade 5 and lives in Roblin, MB. He has volunteered in 61 fiddle performances in 3 yrs. He plays for church services and fundraisers, as well as at the fair and at weddings, funerals and anniversaries. He sponsors a foster child. Scott has turned down payment for services and instead donates the money back to the cause. He helps his mom deliver Meals on Wheels 3 times/yr, and also plays the fiddle at each home. His volunteerism has been recognized by the MLA and by Inky Mark. He represents rural Saskatchewan in Telemiracle and is currently selling hands for them. He volunteered at the Recycling Depot for a year. Scoot Cornelius has a huge heart and he is our first place winner.

 

 

 

 

Autumn Jackson-She’s from Russell, MB. She is a community leader. She is active in the 4H program. Works with the Canadian Charolais Youth Association (http://youth.charolais.com/). She does Ukrainian dancing; she is the middle yrs assistant coach and referee camp volunteer. Autumn is the coordinator for Lake of the Prairies Environmental Youth Corp. She is a top performing student, a student council volunteer and a peer support member. She is also a Manitoba Rural Athlete of the week.

 

Sarah Engen-She is from Dauphin, MB and she will be graduating at the end of June. She has one of the highest averages in school. She has a part-time job tutoring her peers. She was the pianist for her high school musical, with an estimate of 50 hrs/month. She is the president of Youth Philanthropy group. She helps coordinate community events, organized World Diabetes Day and organized Rock Band fundraiser for children’s hospital in Winnipeg, which had a total of over $700. She is also the best volunteer the DRCSS has ever seen.

 

 

 

 

 

Julie Medwid-She is from Dauphin, MB and is graduating this year from the DRCSS. Julie helps the Diabetes Association weekly. She is an instructor for Highland dancing. She is part of the Youth Philanthropy group. She organizes activities with Dauphin elementary school during Diabetes awareness month. Julie also goes to the Diabetes Association during her break to help Pam Chetyrbuk.

 

 

 Jessica Wellburn-She is in grade 9 and is from the community of Camperville. Jessica is a Youth Center Volunteer, in activities, programs and fundraisers. She mentors younger children through square dance programs; she even continued to do this with a leg injury. She has also published 3 stories.
